Zoom faces security and privacy issues.

Zoom many problems

Zoom’s free and paid users have grown from 10 million in December 2019 to 200 million daily meetings in March, that’s insane and for sure brings consequences like the ones you are about to read.

People are hijacking Zoom meetings and yelling random stuff just for fun and that’s why Elon Musk and Nasa prohibited their employees to use Zoom (The super famous / everybody is using it video conference app) over important issues related to privacy and security. Zoom has already frozen any further developments for at least a couple of months to improve its security and to review third parties.

Zoom numbers have been going crazy but for sure they brought more scrutiny on the company’s product security and privacy standards. These last days researchers detailed two new security bugs found in the Zoom app. The Zoom Windows was leaking network credentials due to the app rendering UNC file paths as a clickable link in group chat windows.

Then a new vulnerability was disclosed by the founder of Objective-see (A security company focussed on Apple) in the macOS Zoom installer, which was using an unacceptable and insecure application programming interface in macOS.Also, they were trashed by  The Intercept for allegedly misleading users about the platform’s end-to-end (E2E)* encryption. Zoom admitted that E2E is not currently possible for Zoom video meetings and instead uses transport layer security (TLS)* encryption.

We sure hope that Zoom gets their things together and fixes everything, if not they might suffer in the near future.

E2E Encryption: End-to-end encryption is a system of communication where only the communicating users can read the messages

TLS Encryption: Symmetric-key encryption to provide confidentiality to the data that it transmits.
